From the Desk of the President (June, 2010)

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Minneapolis PRIDE celebration will be held the weekend of June 25 - 27, 2010.  Candace Lund from the AFL-CIO is looking for members to people the AFL-CIO booth that weekend.  The booth is located in Loring Park . Shifts are usually 2 hours on Saturday and Sunday.  I have done it for the past couple of years and have found it to be a very rewarding experience.  You get to talk to a lot of people who are union members as well as educate those who are not about our issues.  If you think that this is something you would like to volunteer for, you can contact Candace directly at clund@mnaflcio.org or call her at 651-227-7647.

Also, we need people to be part of the labor contingent in the PRIDE parade on Sunday, June 27th.  AFSCME Council 5 has had our banner carried by AFSCME members in the parade for a while.  Each year the group gets bigger.  Let me know if you can join the group this year or need more information.

Minneapolis Marathon can still use volunteers for Water Station # 25 - the first one going out and the last one coming back for the runners.  It is held on Sunday, June 6th, in the morning.   You can sign up to volunteer on the Council 5 web site, http://afscmemn.org/minneapolis-marathon-volunteers-needed.

An updated 2010 Seniority Report is now on the Hennepin County Labor Relations web site.  Please look at it to make sure that your information is correct; the link to that site is: http://hennote1.co.hennepin.mn.us/HR/Intranet/GenlInfo.nsf/2c3c06f0ef9746f18625704a00505136/ddd6c0fd42964ba986256c61004f9e11?OpenDocument.

If you think that your information is incorrect, contact me by no later than July 5th as we have an agreed upon time frame for making corrections to the report.  When you contact me, I will need to know your job class, your employee ID # (found on your badge), why you feel the information is incorrect and what you think is the correct information.  All inquiries will be reviewed with Labor Relations and/or Human Resources so that we get that report current.

Social Media Committee.  The Executive Board approved a motion to ask for members interested in exploring the use of social media tools such as Facebook and Twitter to serve on a committee and report back to the membership on what is feasible, how those tools could be used, some parameters, etc.  If you are interested in working on this committee, please let me know by no later than the July 7, 2010 General Assembly.  We have so many opportunities to better communicate with our members and to provide better service to them, and this could be one of those resources to help us do just that.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the May 8th Letter Carriers food drive.  Members of the Minneapolis Branch of Letter Carriers reported that they will exceed their goal of beating last year's total pounds - over 1 million pounds last year.  At the time of their report at the June 12th Minneapolis Labor Federation meeting, they still had 18 trucks to unload as the response had been so great.  You have helped your neighborhood food shelves to get restocked so that they can serve those in need - just in time for the summer crunch.  Thank you.

Fare for All Express has been mentioned more than once in the newsletter.  This program is open to everyone - no income criteria to meet.  Here is a link to the listing of all the sites in the metro area:  http://www.emergencyfoodshelf.org/OurFamilyOfPrograms/ffa/.

June 21st is the first day of summer.  I hope that you all plan to get out and enjoy all the beautiful public parks we have around the state.  When you are there, make sure to thank your sister or brother union member for the good work they do in maintaining the parks so that we can enjoy our time there.  Happy summer!
