From the Desk of the President (6/2005)

CONGRATULATIONS!

A big round of applause goes to Laurie Simon who was elected by unanimous ballot at the May 18, 2005 Executive Board meeting to fill the vacant Professional Member-at-Large position.  She brings a wealth of knowledge and a long history of service to this position as this is not her first time serving the Local in this capacity.  Please join us in wishing her well as she assumes her job duties as an officer of the Local.

COMMITTEES

Local 34 Standing Committee appointments are approved on an annual basis. Because the May newsletter was out so close to the May GA and we did not have enough time to review committee appointments, a motion was passed by the body at the May GA to continue the existing appointments until the June GA.  Some committee appointments were approved (with several additions approved at the May E-Board) in order for the pressing business of the Local to be done in a timely fashion.  Those Standing Committee appointments are as follows:

Please note that we will be able to add more members to all of the committees at any time so, if you have an interest in serving on any of them, just give me a call or send me an e-mail.

We also have Non-standing Committees whose membership is dictated by our Constitution and are in current operation.

Brief Highlights for May 2005

Heavy duty discussions on the future direction for health insurance in Hennepin County have been held at the Labor/Management Health Care Committee meetings.  The nine AFSCME local representatives will caucus prior to the May 24th meeting to candidly talk about what we would like to see happen and how we think we can best serve our members' interests and concerns on the issues of health insurance and health care.  At this point, we have not decided yet on an approach, as we still need to review options.

We received a legislative update by Mary Beth Davidson, lobbyist for the County, on the issues before the State Senate and House that are of interest to the County.  Not surprising to us was the fact that we, (AFSCME) and the County share pretty much the same concerns - we need to have a commitment for LGA (local government aid) funds so that we can continue to adequately do the work that we do providing services to the residents of the County. Our Council 5 lobbyists have been very active at the Hill advocating on our behalf.  It is incumbent on all of us as citizens to contact our Senators and Representatives to encourage them to pass a balanced budget with revenue solutions so that public services are fully funded.

Here are our Non-Standing Committees, whose membership is dictated by our Constitution and are in current operation.

Local 34 Contract Supplement

Members of Local 34's Master Negotiations Committee have been meeting for the past few months to work on the contract proposal based on the results of the one-on-one surveys completed in March and April.  We had our final meeting in conjunction with the May 18th E-Board to narrow down the issues we felt best reflected the issues from those surveys.  We also have been meeting with members of the other eight AFSCME locals to work on our master contract proposal.

Please plan to attend the June 1st GA to get an update on the work of this group. Food will be provided at the meeting so bring your appetites and your fellow members to HSB 112 at 5:15 PM.

See you then, Jean
