From the Desk of the President (January, 2013)
Local 34 members with a passion for serving on the AFSCME Master Negotiations
Committee…. The members of our local, along with the members of the other five
Hennepin County AFSCME locals, work together to craft our negotiations proposal
which is presented to the Employer. We meet 4 - 5 times over the course of a few
months to review our contracts, finds sections that we think need to be changed,
talk to our fellow members about what they would like to see in the contract and
bring those ideas to the meetings. We find those areas of common interest to all
six locals which become the main proposal as well as items that are specific to
Local 34 which then become our supplemental proposal. The
members of the Master Committee approve the final proposal. Once negotiations
are over and we have a tentative agreement from the Employer, it is the Master
Committee that reviews that agree-ment and votes on whether or not to recom-mend
acceptance to our members. We have our first meeting of the Committee on Monday,
February 11, 2013 at 5:30 PM in the Government Center Auditorium. Please let me
know if you are interested in serving on this committee - I will be asking the
membership to approve our Local 34 participants at the Janu-ary 10, 2013 General
Assembly. We can always add more folks so please contact me if you are reading
this after1/10/13. Please note that the members of the Table Team must serve on
the Master Committee.
